ADVENTURE SAILING

BYRA is now offering Adventure Sailing!

BYRA's Adventure Sailing is a series of supported group excursions that enable sailors of all abilities to improve their skills and confidence through good old-fashioned adventures on the crystal clear waters of Pittwater.

Operating outside the confines of traditional dinghy racing, these events are relaxed and friendly. Adventure Sails are designed to build friendships, strengthen family bonds, and showcase the opportunities to explore that sailing skills enable, fostering a genuine love of sailing in the process.

But what exactly is an Adventure Sail?

An 'Adventure Sail' is a monthly passage sail within Pittwater, with its many wonderful nature spots offering a different destination each time. With Ku-ring-gai National Park to the west and white sand beaches like Clareville to the east, we are spoilt for choice.

Adventures Sails are voyages of discovery. Combined with picnics, swimming and beach activities, the day can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of ability, experience, or confidence. Solo sailors can sail in company, while families can enjoy a day out together. Think of it as dingy-cruising. Participants can make this event as relaxed or competitive as they like.

Adventure Sailing also provides a brilliant lead into Sunday racing for those sailors keen but lacking in confidence, as well as offering a pathway to sailing and crewing on keelboats.

Sailors from Avalon Sailing Club and the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club are also invited to attend, thus broadening social and sailing networks further.

Is it suitable for families to sail together?

Yes!

Adventure Sailing is especially well suited to families, some of whom may still be learning to sail. BYRA has been inspired by the hugely successful children’s television program Bluey in which parents form an integral part of children's activities as they learn about life together. This is wonderfully encapsulated by the 'Tom & Teddy at BYRA' video using our sail training dinghies.

Sailing is one of the few sports where parents and children can participate with, and even against each other, over their entire lives.

What is the format?

A standard 'Adventure Sail' will involve a group sail from BYRA to a designated location in Pittwater, regrouping at agreed points along the way. Up to an hour will be spent at the destination for lunching, relaxing, and exploring, followed by a race back to BYRA (or ASC/RPAYC for those participants).

BYRA will provide a Safety Boat and a separate Sailing Group Leader who will periodically sweep for any stragglers.

The BYRA Safety Boat will also transport the lunch Esky, noting that participants must bring their own.

Destinations are selected based on wind direction and strength and decided on the day. Check out all our incredible options!

What does a typical Adventure Sail day out look like?

  1. Meet at BYRA around 10:30 - 11:00 a.m. to rig boats
  2. Mandatory Adventure-Sail Briefing at 11:30 a.m.
  3. Departure from BYRA at 12 noon
  4. Sail to the agreed destination - whoop whoop!
  5. Enjoy destination
  6. Race back to BYRA for an approximate arrival time of 3 p.m.
  7. De-rig and enjoy BYRA's deck at your leisure!

What if I don't own a boat?

While participants are encouraged to join in their own craft - all of which are welcomed! - club boats are also available from BYRA under the normal boat hire policy. Please contact the BYRA Commodore if this creates a barrier to participation - commodore@byra.com.au.
